Red Cedar Chamber Music: Cactus Quintet
Red Cedar Chamber Music’s Directors and core ensemble, violinist Miera Kim and cellist Carey Bostian, will be joined by violinist Renee Santos, violist Oliver Bostian, and clarinetist Christine Bellomy to present Cactus Quintet. The program features the Mozart Clarinet Quintet, Five Dances from Gumboots by David Bruce, and a Gershwin medley arranged by Steve Shanley.
Mozart’s quintet was originally written for his friend Anton Stadler to play on one of the transitional instruments of the time, the basset clarinet, which had a larger range that the standard clarinets of the time. It is an exceptionally beautiful work that we have wanted to perform with Christine for years.
David Bruce’s Gumboots dances were inspired by the gumboot dance of oppressed miners in South African gold mines. The miners weren’t allowed to speak and developed a form of communication using the slapping sounds that the boots created in the wet mine, enabling them to communicate and even parody their captors. Gumboot dancing continues to be a popular form of street art in South Africa. While Bruce’s dances do have African musical influences, he references dance rhythms from all over the world.
Steve Shanley originally arranged our Gershwin Medley for clarinet trio in 2019. For this concert, he has expanded it for clarinet quintet. The medley includes music from an American in Paris and Porgy and Bess and will bring the program to a joyful close.
