Stephen Sondheim’s thrilling and chilling masterwork, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, is brought to life this January. Presented by Cedar Rapids Opera, this now-classic tale of madness and revenge rides the razor’s edge between complex scores and endlessly catchy anthems that you’ll find yourself singing for weeks afterwards.
The globally renowned voice talents of baritone Tim Mix (as Sweeney Todd), mezzo-soprano Margaret Gawrysiak (as Mrs. Lovett), local soprano Jessica Pray Patel (as Johanna Barker), and University of Iowa faculty baritone Jeremiah Sanders (as Judge Turpin) will drag you into 19th Century London’s Fleet Street. Attend the tale and bear witness to Sweeney Todd’s obsessive pursuit of revenge against the unjust Judge Turpin who has taken everything from him all while the darkness closes in around him and his partner-in-crime, the ever-faithful Mrs. Lovett.
The tale of Sweeney Todd is sure to make your hair stand on end. Don’t miss this performance directed by Pacific Opera Project’s Josh Shaw from Los Angeles with Cedar Rapids Opera’s Daniel Kleinknecht conducting your Orchestra Iowa in the pit. With two shows to choose, Friday, January 22nd or Sunday, January 24th at the Paramount Theatre. Join us for this world-class opera experience you cannot get anywhere else in Eastern Iowa.
