SUMMARY:Red Cedar Chamber Music - Cactus Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Red Cedar Chamber Music: Cactus Quintet\nRed Cedar Chamber Music’s Directors and core ensemble\, violinist Miera Kim and cellist Carey Bostian\, will be joined by violinist Renee Santos\, violist Oliver Bostian\, and clarinetist Christine Bellomy to present Cactus Quintet. The program features the Mozart Clarinet Quintet\, Five Dances from Gumboots by David Bruce\, and a Gershwin medley arranged by Steve Shanley. \nMozart’s quintet was originally written for his friend Anton Stadler to play on one of the transitional instruments of the time\, the basset clarinet\, which had a larger range that the standard clarinets of the time. It is an exceptionally beautiful work that we have wanted to perform with Christine for years. \nDavid Bruce’s Gumboots dances were inspired by the gumboot dance of oppressed miners in South African gold mines. The miners weren’t allowed to speak and developed a form of communication using the slapping sounds that the boots created in the wet mine\, enabling them to communicate and even parody their captors. Gumboot dancing continues to be a popular form of street art in South Africa. While Bruce’s dances do have African musical influences\, he references dance rhythms from all over the world. \nSteve Shanley originally arranged our Gershwin Medley for clarinet trio in 2019. For this concert\, he has expanded it for clarinet quintet. The medley includes music from an American in Paris and Porgy and Bess and will bring the program to a joyful close. \nThis series of concerts is made possible by the Iowa Arts Council (which exists within the Iowa Economic Development Authority) and the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation (Program Support Grant Fund\, Linn County Fund\, Iva C. Robb Fund for Artistic Initiative\, a Liars Theater Legacy Fund\, and John A. and Elsie M. Nelson Fund)\, Transamerica Foundation\, the McIntyre Foundation\, the Grandon Foundation\, the Giacoletto Foundation\, the City of Marion\, and Farmers State Bank. Additional support comes from GreatAmerica Financial Services and Hills Bank. \nArtist Sponsorship generously provided by the Giacoletto Foundation. \nTickets: $30

SUMMARY:KITTY STEADMAN
DESCRIPTION:Singer-songwriter Kitty Steadman has spent the better part of a decade carving her own path through the Americana scene — equal parts grit\, heart\, and wanderlust. Known for her powerhouse vocals and vivid storytelling\, Kitty first made waves as the frontwoman and primary songwriter for Drop Dead Dangerous\, the high-energy Southern rock and roots outfit that earned a devoted following across the country. While her time with the band shaped her voice and drive\, Kitty’s solo work reveals a new depth — more personal\, more honest\, and more her. Her songs balance edge and empathy\, celebrating resilience and connection with a voice that feels lived-in and true. From the songwriter rounds of Nashville to the sun-soaked stages of Key West\, Kitty’s shows blend energy\, intimacy\, and community. Her fans — lovingly known as the Steadheads — have followed her through every musical chapter\, from rowdy full-band anthems to stripped-down storytelling nights. Her forthcoming project\, The Orchid\, recorded in Key West\, marks the next evolution of her sound: rooted in her past\, but boldly blooming into something entirely her own.
